uilt for military reasons, Villefranche is characterized by the richness of its architecture. Grounded on the initial bailey of the XIth century, completed in the XIIIth century by eight angle towers, it was reinforced inn the XVII th century with six ramparts by the Marshal Vauban.
he Liberia Fortress overtops Villefranche, the citadel that has maintained unspoiled its medieval military architecture and therefore it offers a unique excursion in the military buildings of the France of the past.

illefranche's roman church is a masterpiece of the Christian architecture. The church is composed of a gothic bell tower and of roman capitals in the front portals. The architectural variety is due to two later expansions, in the XIIth and in the XIIIth century.

      

nside the church made of pink marble, you will find a lot of Christian sculptures, such as a lying Christ, St Peter, several gothic stalls Renaissance and Baroque retables.

n the Middle Age, the ramparts were built to control the crossing of the tree valleys. Then they were modified to meet the military needs of the ages. Today you can discover all the military evolutions, from the medieval embrasures to the cannon embrasures of the XVIIth century.
